How to Start Working From Home When You Don’t Know Where to Start – Step 1

Want to start working from home but don’t know where to start?

That’s what I want to help you with in my new Series called: “How to start working from home when you don’t know where to start.” This is Step 1.

If you’re part of my email list at stephaniebrodt.com, you have already received the steps I believe are necessary for you to begin. What I want to do here, is to break down those steps a little further.

Hopefully, you’ll find new motivation and even more answers to your basic questions about starting to work from home (or from wherever you want to work).

Ok, let’s get started:

Step 1 – Figure Out WHAT You Want To Do While Working From Home

What is the very first thing you should do when you’re trying to learn how to work from home?

You should figure out what you like to do!

You certainly don’t want to spend every day sitting in your dream location but hating what you’re doing the entire time. After all, you may be doing that right now in an office or cubicle. Do you really just want to change your location but still hate what you’re doing?

I say, No Way!

A common question I get from people is that they don’t really know “what” they want to do at this stage in their life.

Is this you?

Do you know what you want to do now?

If you’re like some of us, you’ve been a mother, a wife, a friend, a daughter, a sister, and more.

You’ve been what everyone needed you to be.

So what do YOU want to be now?

Don’t know?

You can sign up here and receive FREE tips that go along perfectly with this series.

To get you started:

Try asking yourself these questions:

  1. When you were younger (say, 20-something) what did you dream about doing?
  2. Did you want to travel?
  3. Would you love to do something more creatively?
  4. Do you love variety? Or prefer knowing what’s happening from day-to-day?
  5. Do you want to try something completely new? Or love what you do right now?
  6. If you didn’t need an income, what would you choose to do?

You need to know yourself first!

For some of us at this stage in life, we have forgotten what our dreams and wishes are.

We have spent so many years focusing on the wishes and dreams of others (and, by the way, have loved every minute of it for the most part) but have now forgotten what we want for ourselves.

Step 1 is to figure this out.

Ok, so you’ve asked yourself these questions and have spent some time really thinking about it.

Is it still unclear?

Maybe a personality test will help you move a little closer.

Try a couple of these personality tests:

  1. Birkman.com ($)
  2. Kolbe.com ($)
  3. Discprofile.com ($)
  4. 123test.com (free)
  5. 16Personalities.com (free)

Some of these tests take a while to complete. You can’t just zip through them and expect the results to be accurate.

Take your time.

Think through how you answer.

But, most importantly, be honest with yourself!

(Note: Several times I am tempted to put down what “sounds better about myself” than what is the reality. This helps no one – especially not me. Don’t be like me!)

If you take more than one test, you should start seeing a pattern of what your likes and dislikes really are.

You should also see a pattern of what type of work will mesh with your type of personality.

It’s a great starting tool for you! Use it!

Also, keep the results handy. You’ll want to go back to the results from time-to-time.

Look at what’s being done right now online or from home:

Now that you’re starting to see that pattern, try using Google.com and search for jobs for your type of personality. One search example might be: “work from home jobs for creative introverts.

You’ll find all kinds of information this way. Maybe even some new job ideas you’ve never thought of.

Check them out

Research them.

Get a feel for what other people are doing every day online that have a similar personality as yours.

Maybe some of the jobs that are currently out there are exactly what you do right now – only they are done from home. Yay! You’re exactly in the right spot for getting that job.

Some of the jobs may be just a little different than what you do right now.  Just make the adjustment or add that skill to your knowledge base.

The perfect job might already be out there just waiting for you to snag it.

Just look!
