How to Get Clients on Social Media
When you consider working as a Virtual Assistant, finding clients to work with is a big deal. You probably wonder how to get clients on social media. But I want to tell you to focus not just on using social media to find the clients but also on using social media to help the clients find YOU.
Here’s the truth that changed everything for me: Your social media presence isn’t just about cute quotes and perfect pictures – it’s the most powerful client attraction tool you have as a virtual assistant.
And, I want to help you understand how to use it.
The Social Media Shift (From Personal to Powerful)
Let’s start with something that might feel a little uncomfortable: Your social media accounts need to shift from just personal to purposefully professional.
Now, I’m not saying you need to go all “corporate robot” on everyone!
In fact, that’s the exact opposite of what works.
What I am saying is that it’s time to start seeing your social media platforms in a new way – as the bridge between you and your dream clients.
When I made this mindset shift, everything changed.
Instead of just posting whatever came to mind, I started using social media with a purpose.
And let me tell you – that’s when things changed.
Which Platforms Actually Matter (Hint: Not All of Them)
Can I share something that might save you months of frustration?
You don’t need to be on every single platform.
I know, it seems like we should use them all because they are ALL an option for us.
But, for virtual assistants, I’ve found these three platforms consistently deliver the best results:
LinkedIn: Your Professional Gold Mine
LinkedIn isn’t just for corporate ladder climbers anymore.
Here’s why it’s incredibly important to use LinkedIn when looking to get clients on social media:
- It’s where the money is. LinkedIn is where all the professionals and business owners go. They understand the value of delegation and have the budget to invest in support (such as your services).
- Decision-makers are active there. Unlike other platforms where you might connect with assistants or team members, on LinkedIn you may be talking with the CEO or founder who makes hiring decisions.
- The professional context creates trust. When you connect on LinkedIn, you’re meeting potential clients in a business mindset – they’re already thinking about growth, efficiency, and solutions.
- It’s less saturated for VAs. While Instagram might be flooded with virtual assistant profiles, LinkedIn still offers a blue ocean opportunity to stand out.
LinkedIn is a great platform for those VAs looking to get clients on social media.
It tends to have fewer “spam” postings and often you can check out the potential client much more before even talking with them in person.
Instagram: Your Visual Connection Builder
Don’t dismiss Instagram as just a place for pretty pictures! For virtual assistants, it’s a relationship-building powerhouse:
- It’s perfect for humanizing your services. Through Stories, Reels, and posts, you can showcase your personality right along with your knowledge – crucial for service providers who need to build trust.
- Creative entrepreneurs live here. If you’re targeting coaches, course creators, or creative small business owners, Instagram is their virtual homeplace.
- It allows you to showcase your creative abilities. Through your own well-designed feed, you showcase your visual organization skills many clients desperately need.
- Behind-the-scenes content builds massive trust. Sharing glimpses of your workspace, tools, and process helps potential clients envision working with you.
Note: I’ve listed Instagram here because so many people use this social media platform. However, I don’t personally use it.
In fact, I’m not really interested in a pretty design, stories, and posts – nor does my ideal client use this platform.
This is something to consider when deciding what social media platforms you want to attempt to find clients on.
Facebook Groups: Your Warm Relationship Goldmine
Facebook Groups might seem “old school,” but they remain one of the most powerful client attraction tools for virtual assistants:
- They’re built for solving problems. Most business-focused groups are filled with entrepreneurs actively asking for help – giving you the perfect opportunity to demonstrate your expertise.
- They foster community over competition. The right groups create a sense of belonging where real connection happens naturally.
- They offer direct insight into client pain points. By simply observing the questions being asked, you gain priceless insight into what services to offer and how to position them.
- They allow for relationship-building before pitching. Through consistent, helpful participation, group members begin to recognize and trust you long before you ever mention your services.
This is a “long game”. You will not find clients overnight in these groups.
It will take time to add value and help out before you end up making connections to work with a potential client.
Be patient on this one.
Get Your Online Presence Ready
When you start applying for work with potential clients, the first thing they are going to do is look at your online presence.
They will try to determine (whether they realize it or not):
- Do you “look” dependable and capable?
- Are you going to be able to do the work they need?
- Are you comfortable with social media platforms?
- Are you arguing with online friends and coworkers about politics on social media? (Hint: This can turn potential clients away).
Everything you put online is fair game.
Let’s get practical. Here’s exactly what you need to do to transform your social media presence into a client-attracting machine:
Step 1: Optimize Your Profile
Your profile is your virtual handshake. Here’s what needs to happen:
- Professional photo: It doesn’t need to be fancy, but it does need to be clear, well-lit, and approachable
- Bio that speaks directly to your ideal clients: Instead of “Virtual Assistant,” try “I help busy real estate agents reclaim 10+ hours per week through seamless systems & admin support”
- Clear call-to-action: Make it obvious what someone should do next (DM you, book a call, etc.)
Each social media platform profile can look a little different. They don’t have to all be exactly the same.
Step 2: Create Content That Positions You as the Solution
Here’s what most new VAs get wrong – they talk endlessly about virtual assistant services instead of focusing on their clients’ problems.
Try this content formula when you’re wondering how to get clients on social media:
- Problem posts: Highlight a specific struggle your ideal clients face
- Solution posts: Show how your services solve that specific problem
- Result posts: Share stories (even hypothetical ones when starting out) of the transformation your services provide
- Behind-the-scenes posts: Give glimpses into your work process and the tools you use
Potential clients want to know what you can do for them.
Not just what you can do in general.
Remember this one!
Step 3: Engage Like Your Business Depends On It (Because It Does)
This is where the magic happens, friend. Posting is just the beginning – meaningful engagement is where clients actually come from.
Set aside 20 minutes daily to:
- Comment thoughtfully on potential clients’ posts
- Respond to industry questions in groups with helpful (never “salesey”) answers
- Engage with comments on your own content within 24 hours
- Send personalized connection requests with a warm, non-pitchy message
Set a calendar reminder on this one so you get in the habit of doing this every day.
The Secret Sauce: Consistency Over Perfection
Can I share something personal?
I absolutely hate social media.
So my personal tendency is to avoid it at all costs.
But, I have to tell you, being consistent on social media will move you forward every single time.
It doesn’t need to be flawless – it needs to be consistent. That means:
- Showing up regularly (even when you don’t feel like it)
- Staying true to your message
- Being authentically you (because that’s who your clients actually want to work with)
When you commit to consistency for 90 days, that’s when the real magic starts to happen.
Just Make a Point To Be Seen
Let me give you something I wish someone had given me early in my journey: you need to take up space on social media as the incredible virtual assistant you are (or are becoming).
You don’t need 10,000 followers.
You don’t need perfectly designed graphics.
You don’t need to dance on TikTok (unless you want to!).
What you do need is the courage to show up consistently, share your expertise, and connect genuinely with potential clients.
Because when you do that – when you show up as the solution to your ideal client’s problems – you create the foundation for a thriving virtual assistant business that allows you to work from anywhere your heart desires.
Ready to take that first step?
